CD3 CD Player

Review by Guido D. Corona of Positive Feedback Issue N. 47

"What was totally unexpected upon first sound, is that CD3 cold from the factory already sounds pleasing. Dreading the screech owl-like intemperance of a typical new digital player, I was surprised by CD3's perfectly listenable behavior, already moderately sweet and with good resolution. The confirmation that this player may be something special came when, while enchanted by a transcription of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, in a touching performance by Sofia Pettersson (vocal) and Tomas Hallonsten (trumpet) from the album Slow Down (Prophone PCD 066), my wife exclaims uncharacteristically: “This is a magnificent CD player!” This was a true first for her. She has never made, nor even admitted to, such a spontaneous declaration for any player until now."

"CD3 is quite Scandinavian in its svelte form-follow-function elegance. An outwardly conventional underlying Aluminum sheet metal chassis is covered by a 3mm (millimeters) thick Aluminum hood, handsomely finished with a rugged black powdered coat. A fine metallic mesh protects a series of generous ventilation openings, which spell the GamuT company logo in large laser-cut characters towards the front of the hood, while further ventilation slots towards the back outline 2 large triangles of almost IBMish shutterbars. The 10mmm inch thick silvery front fascia of anodized Aluminum bears an understated GamuT logo etched into its top right edge. 6 large control buttons mounted on hidden neoprene pads frame a mirrored display panel, with the CD tray door opening in its center."

Reprinted form Product Sheet
The next generation, the new King, the GamuT CD 3! After years of dedicated work and commitment to replace and refine one of the finest CD players in the world, the CD1,we proudly present the highly improved successor - the long awaited CD 3.

Creating a better CD player than the CD1 has been a demanding task. It involved a complete redesign of the layout and the components used in the player to improve the electronic and mechanical stability. The result has been a state of the art CD player with a sound quality second to none.

The heart of the CD 3 is our nonmagnetic stainless steel inner chassis which holds the rubber suspended mechanism and the digital output board. Located in the centre of the player, the stainless steel inner chassis divides the interior space into three separate cabinets. This isolates the very heavy power supply and its associated heavy currents from the delicate signals being handled by the digital to analogue conversion and
amplification located on the other side of the inner chassis.

The power supplies for the digital and analogue sections use two separate high quality toroidal power transformers to assure maximum stability, the lowest possible interference and a better separation between the two sections. To further ensure voltage stability the design of the digital to analogue board was made to incorporate special ultra low noise components.

These changes ensure not only a better sounding CD player, but also one with increased stability and reliability. The CD 3’s digital to analogue conversion is built from the best components available today. A 24 bit 192 kHz asynchronous sample rate converter was chosen to generate the up sampled signal for the 24 Bit Burr Brown PCM 1792 Converter. Special care was then taken to ensure the best possible analogue amplification.
Great technical specifications do not on their own guarantee great sound. However, in the case of the CD 3 we are sure you will find it hard to believe not only the amount of detail, but also how well musicality is retrieved from your beloved records - even the ones you know so well. Never has realism been so close.

Reprinted from GamuT web Site:
The D3 is a completely new player created on the sonic experience we gained from the highly acclaimed CD1. The CD3 is restructured  and specified from scratch, focusing on electronic and mechanical stability. With the CD3 they are approaching the  performance maximum of the Compact Disc as we know it. he heart of the CD3 is a non-magnetic steel chassis. The  chassis divides the inner space into three separate cabinet  compartments, allowing the power supply, the audio signal and  the DA-conversion to run completely isolated. This construction
eliminates noise, distortion and interference completely
Power and Control:
Power supplies for analogue and digital are completely separated to secure an optimal electrical dynamic stability and to minimize any interference between power supplies.
The CD3 is built with extremely silent and linear components. Likewise, the DA-conversion is implemented with state of the art technology like the Burr Brown PCM 1792 converter

D3i Preamp - Dual Mono Preamp

Positive Feedback Review by Larry Cox

"Sonically the D3i is charming. And, I don't mean beguiling because it performed in ways that I wanted it to. Swapping it out for my tube preamp didn't make me suddenly realize that the D3i was a typical solid state preamp with a lean dry character.

The GamuT has nearly all of the liquidity and body that I find so compelling about tubes, and EAR's implementation of tubes in particular. Though the GamuT does not sound like the EAR preamps I've owned or listened to, they are comparable in that I hear less of the preamp and more of the music that this hobby is supposed to be about."

"Pepe and the Bottle Blonde's vocal acrobatics on "Unnamed" from their debut, Nightlife, were saturated in a realistic timbre, but saturated like a tube preamp at its best. Timbre was rich, more like a milk chocolate than a dark chocolate; tone was clearly communicated in a full-bodied conversation of music. The interweaving of vocals retained the swooping, dancing vocals as I imagine they'd sound live without losing timbre.

I found myself delighted listening to the D3i. I trotted out various audiophile war horses for a little while to get the sense of scale that "Cosmic Hippo" from Bela Fleck's CD of the same name provides, and "Jazz at the Pawn Shop" to hear 3D layering. Reference Recordings' 30th Anniversary Sampler was filled with baubles, trinkets, and other audiophile playthings that I also find satisfying as a music lover rather than a sound lover. Well recorded versions of good music were treated properly by the D3i and as such might be an audiophile's appeal to a music lover to come over to the dark side, er audiophilia, at least for a bit.+

The brand new D3i is an improved version of the highly acclaimed D3. The new version is more user friendly and therefore easier to operate. The design has been refreshed so it is in style with the new design line from Gamut. Inside nothing has changed, so expect the same state-of-the-art sound as from its successor.

When the D3 won the Editors Choice reward in 2005, Jason Kennedy from HiFi Choice wrote: 'This is a genuinely wide-bandwidth, highly transparent preamp that responds precisely to the input signal in a clean, smooth fashion.'
Electrical circuitry considerations:
  • All components used in the D 3i are of the highest quality and have been selected through intensive listing sessions from the PCB itself over the non-magnetic chassis to the legendary Neutrik XLR connectors.
  • Dual Mos-fet hybrid in-and output buffer
  • Soft coupled feet suspend the complete chassis
  • Internally shielding separates the cabinet for power supply and amplifi er section
  • Dual mono construction with separate power supply for each channel
  • Very powerful power supply with high bandwidth and low impedance
INPUTS:

Four unbalanced inputs:

  • RIAA
  • Tuner
  • HTH (Home Theater Bypass)
  • Tape

One Balanced Input:

  • CD

The two balanced line outputs, enables you to connect the D 3i to one or two external power amplifiers. Giving you the option of bi-amping or to drive a second pair of loudspeakers simultaneously. You can also use either the unbalanced or one of the balanced outputs to feed an active subwoofer. In any case - the signal of the output follows the selected level and source.

OUTPUTS:

The D 3i offers you plenty of option when connecting:

  • One pair unbalanced signal line out
  • Two pairs of balanced signal line out
  • One tape out

The two balanced line outputs, enables you to connect the D3i to one or two external power amplifiers. Giving you the option of bi-amping or to drive a second pair of loudspeakers simultaneously. LA Audio Vacuum Tube Electronics
Pro-2 CD Player
Reviews:
http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue49/la_audio.htm  - Bob Levy
Partial Review - click on above link for full review!

"Finally and at last, here is a CD player under $2500 I can unabashedly recommend for analog music seekers and lovers! Hallelujah! With four mighty 6922 Tesla Tubes in its output stage, both balanced and single ended outputs, and a price of just $2395, the LA Audio Pro-2 vacuum tube CD Player is a sure thing for those with major CD collections and no wish to bet the bank right now on either Sooloos or expensive separates. Plus, with a bit of tube rolling, you will go miles toward closing the performance gap between the much more expensive ModWright Sony designs and the E.A.R. Acute CD Player.

Forget about mass market CD / Universal players with all solid state outputs, they will not give you the involving sound, the mellifluous-ness, the dynamics, and the smoothness of the Pro-2. I heard it for the first time in an all LA Audio system with the new Isophon Speakers distributed by KT Audio Imports and run by the friendly Tom Vu. I thought he was playing a turntable then realized it was this brand new LA Audio Pro-2 CD player from Taiwan. It gets so much right that criticizing it is tough!

A solid state CD player this musical for twice as much? No. Can I recommend an outboard DAC this musical for twice as much? No. Can I recommend a universal player this good with CDs for up to twice as much? No. How about recommending a tube CD player in the same price range? No. Twice as much? No. How about British CD Players up to $4000? No. You see why I am so excited about the LA Audio player? It has the performance/price ratio that was missing from the market!"

Following in the well-established modular concept that Muse Electronics has pioneered for many years, the new Muse 200 amplifier is designed, using several possible optional modules, to be configured as a basic stereo power amp, a stereo power amplifier with an analog attenuator module, or as an integrated amplifier. It can also be ordered with a Muse MAP-link input or an AES/EBU input for direct connection to a digital source; the digital incoming signal is converted to an analog signal in the input module. The 200 is an expandable, versatile platform that will fend off obsolescence for many years to come. Combine it with a Muse digital player, get a couple of quality loudspeakers and some cables, and you will have a stellar music system that you can add to as your needs grow
